The canton of St. Gallen may not be the most well-known in Switzerland, but it’s not one to be overlooked. The setting is every bit as beautiful as the others, with a serene countryside, picturesque landscape, joined by the enchanting Lake Constance.
Located in northeast Switzerland, on the border of the cantons of Grisons, Schwyz, and Zurich, the canton of St. Gallen is covered with forests, alpine pastures, and lakes. It offers a postcard-worthy setting that resembles its neighbors, Austria and Liechtenstein, located beyond the Rhine.
The canton is rich in cultural and architectural heritage and dotted with historical cities. The city of St. Gallen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, full of unique corbel facades and daily discoveries. The 7th-century abbey cloister, with its delicate embroidery and magnificent library, serves as an important cultural center, especially for European students. St. Gallen is also appreciated by nature lovers, because you can explore different paths to the town of Appenzell, Lake Constance, and the “Chemin des 18 Ponts†by foot bike, or train.
The charming town of Rapperswil-Jona and its houses with the pointy roofs (typical to the region) are tourist attractions all on their own. Nicknamed the City of Roses, this old medieval town is overlooked by a fairytale-like castle. It’s an amazing place to live, in any season. It has a Mediterranean atmosphere only made more beautiful by plane trees lining the shores of Lake Zurich and restaurant terraces in full bloom. Nearby, the Atzmännig ski area is a favorite for families, sports enthusiasts, and thrill seekers looking for its 700m toboggan course.
Living on the shores of Lake Constance feels like a your on vacation all year. It’s the third largest lake in Europe, and paradise to sailors, captains, and water sports enthusiasts. The hilly landscapes surrounding the lake are simply sublime, offering a panorama that changes with the seasons to the delight of homeowners in the region.
